The trip begins

Day 1 Saturday September 23, 2006

We picked up Matt from Cardiff airport which was only about an hour away from our house. As Matt was feeling the jet lag he had a good couple of hours sleep while Megan and I got some food shopping done for the trip. When Matt was up we went into Bristol at night and had look around the city centre and had a beer at some outside seating by the harbour.

Getting back to the car we did a small driving tour of Bristol which ended up by Clifton Suspension Bridge but unfortunately we were unable to find any parking close by so we just drove by it. Yet again the bridge was closed as well so we couldn't drive over it.

We went back to Severn Beach and got things ready for the next day.

Day 2 Sunday September 24, 2006

We had the car all packed up and finally got onto the M5 highway heading north around 10am. It was only a few hours before we made it to the town of Chester which is the only town in England that still has its wall completely around it. On route to Chester we pulled over to take some photos of a hay stack on a farmers field. Check out the picture below and you will understand why. It was in the middle of nowhere but still pretty original. Once we got into Chester we walked a complete circle around the walls which is about 2 miles stopping quite a lot to take photos and check out places nearby. The town now expands outside of the walls so you get a great view of town on both sides. One of the main attractions was the Eastgate Clock which is said to be the 2nd most famous clock in England after Big Ben in London. It was built to celebrate Queen Victoria's 80th birthday in 1897.

After we had done the touristy bit we walked down to the river and relaxed on the bench listening to some live music from a 2 piece band. They played mostly 50's stuff so Megan was the only one to recognize any of the songs. We spent a little more time in the town on the old streets and the wishing steps (you have to hold your breath and run up and down the steps and make a wish) before heading back to the car and making our way to Liverpool.

We made it to the outskirts of Liverpool to a place called Speke which was an awful dump. Luckily we did not find accommodation here. We kept looking and finally found a place but they wouldn't allow us to have 3 adults in one room so we kept on going. We went to a town further called Winwick which is about 30min outside Liverpool city centre and finally found a place. This time Megan stayed in the car and only Matt and I went it and we snuck Megan after we had already paid. This is not the only time we did this on the trip. Anyways there was a bar next door and Matt and I went over to have a few beers before calling it a night.

As I do not want to make this one exceptionally long post I am breaking it up into smaller sections. Check back in a few days to read about the days we spent in Liverpool and Manchester.
